Intercultural lullabies connect
isolated cultural groups

Connecting Cultures Through Song.
Community Arts Network (CAN) create an accessible intercultural lullaby book showcasing 16 different language
groups.

Language and cultural isolation
can create barriers to community connection.

Community Arts Network (CAN) recognised the need to:

  • Celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures within the Bunbury region.
  • Foster connection through the universal language of music.
  • Create an inclusive, accessible resource that bridges language barriers, age groups, and abilities.
  • Honour and represent 16 distinct cultural communities in an authentic way.

This project helps create community connection and cohesion within our multiculturally diverse society.

Studio Loka collaborated with CAN to design the Intercultural Lullabies Songbook, a visually engaging, accessible collection of songs and stories celebrating multicultural voices.

Key actions:

  • Visual identity rooted in culture: Integrated oceanthemed artwork by Aboriginal artist Korrine Bennell (Karrak Design) as the visual foundation, connecting to place and story.
  • Inclusive navigation system: Developed a colour and symbol key to represent each language group— moving beyond text abbreviations to cater to nonEnglish speakers, while addressing accessibility considerations like colour blindness.
  • Accessible design: Carefully crafted layouts and typography to ensure readability across varying age groups, languages, and abilities.
  • Community celebration: Supported the launch event at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre, showcasing performances in 13 languages by over 75 community members representing 16 cultural groups.
  • An accessibly designed songbook fostering intercultural understanding.
  • A unifying event attended by over 200 guests, strengthening community bonds.
  • A lasting resource that celebrates and preserves diverse linguistic heritage.

This project demonstrates the power of thoughtful, inclusive design in building cultural connection. By honouring every community voice and addressing real accessibility challenges, the Intercultural Lullabies project brought isolated groups together through shared storytelling and song.
